Wild Ideas with Pamela Slim

By Business Motivation, Uncategorized No Comments

A while back, I grabbed a few of my most wildly creative entrepreneur friends and asked them all the same thing:

Tell me about a risky, wild idea you took action on… and it paid off.

I wanted to hear their thoughts on risk taking and innovation… and inspire YOU to take risks with your wildly creative ideas.

Pamela Slim, author of Escape from Cubicle Nation and her latest, Body of Work, is a risk taker extraordinaire. From her days as a high school exchange student to her current fame as a best selling author and coach, Pam’s life is devoted to curiously seeking new ways of understanding the world and ourselves.

How To Get People Talking Online

By Market Positioning No Comments

A great way to position your genius is to spark memorable conversations online, particularly in social media. All you need is a HOT TOPIC!

Hot topics are ones that irresistibly invite others to chime in… it’s the type of conversation that sparks comments, shares, likes, and can also position you exactly where you want to be: as the conversation STARTER, the thought LEADER, the genius expert at the heart of it all. You can also embed your hot topic into an image.

Here are some examples of ways you can start a hot topic on your blog, in social media, online video, emails, or whatever mediums you choose. Don’t limit yourself and be creative!

1. Does this bug you too?

Let’s say you’ve experienced something over and over that’s completely put a burr in your saddle. Bad customer service. Arrogance. Cheap sales tactics. Bait and switch. By simply naming the problem (not naming the name, that’s going for nasty and we’re trying to use this as a tool to help your business, not mete out revenge on people who tick you off) you suddenly open the flood gates for other people to chime in. It’s a great way to lead a conversation towards a solution and find like minded people who you want to align with.

2. Elephant Under the Rug

Like the first example, The Elephant Under the Rug often exposes a problem that most people choose to step around. Find a way to bring it to the public eye in a way that gets people to open up, share, and come back to you.

3. Which One Should I Go With?

A very fast and easy way to spark a conversation is to present a choice you’re about to make to your followers and ask for their input. For example, let’s say you just had a session with a photographer and you need to decide which photo to use for a headshot. Put the images out on Facebook and have your followers give you their two cents. The final decision is ultimately up to you, but just think of the anticipation this will build up to as they wait for the big reveal on your site! Traffic!

4. Click LIKE If You Agree

Getting LIKES on Facebook, especially on your Fan Page, will bring more eyes your way. Find an image with an inspiring message and post it to Facebook. Then post it with the message “Click LIKE if you agree” and watch how people respond. You can also ask them to SHARE it if they agree (as an alternative.) This is great when you have an image to go along with it.

Make the decision today to be a conversation STARTER and a thought LEADER in your marketing. Use these strategies to turn heads toward YOU.

I’d love to know what Hot Topics you’re starting on your blog, social media, etc. Share your stuff in the comments below.

Entrepreneur Unleashed Interview

By Business Motivation No Comments

Patti Keating captured my enthusiasm for all things GENIUS during this great interview we did for her podcast, The Entrepreneur Unleashed.

Patti and I have Facebook messages dating back to the Stone Age, but it wasn’t until this past year that we really got to know one another on a more personal level. I love her!

We’ve shared business ideas, motivated one another, sang Karaoke with a couple of hunky Aussies, gotten our backs walked on by masseurs who spoke no English… so in other words I’ve vetted her for you: She’s one of us!

Click here to listen to the interview she conducted- it’s honest, inspiring, raw, funny and will remind you that YOU are a genius. Just like that!

W.A.I.T.

I first learned this acronym when I was training to be a coach. Listening (and letting people talk) are more powerful tools for getting to the solution than lecturing. It works beautifully when selling too!WAIT

Keep this over your phone (if you do a lot of phone work) or in your head as you work with people. It’s one of the best pieces of advice I’ve received!

No List and No Clients

By Build Your Business, Uncategorized No Comments

Most of the tips I share here make a simple assumption: you’ve got a business with clients but you want  more. I mentor coaches ready to make that leap by offering coaching groups, higher end services, and positioning themselves online as experts.

But what about the new coaches? What about the people who don’t have lists or are just starting out online?

By popular demand, I’ve assembled 4 super easy tips to get you clients. You don’t need to learn any software or spend money. These are things I used to build my business 10 years ago and if I had to start all over again, I’d do the exact same thing. From here you can move people onto your list then move up to do more online marketing.

We all need a square one… here you go!

1. Public Speaking

When I first started out, I joined a few networking groups then quickly offered myself as a speaker. This was a great way to get both clients and MORE speaking invites! You can also do “brown bag” talks at local companies, offer community workshops, church seminars, and start building your business locally.

2. Join Groups

Both online and offline, when you’re part of a group you can show off your expertise by offering sharp insights and valuable wisdom. Join groups where your ideal client is hanging out. That’s the secret: if you join groups filled with other coaches, you’ll just spin your wheels!

3. Reach Out Old School Style

Compose a letter that describes your services and send it out to family and friends. Let people know what you’re doing, that you’re accepting clients, and if they’d please share this with people they know who’d benefit from this. It’s an old school approach but it’s tried and true!

4. Talk About Your Business So People Get Excited to Hear More

When people hear you explain your business, do they get excited and want to hear more? Or do they walk away? Fine tune the way you describe what you do and you’ll instantly improve your odds of getting the sale!

Put those 4 pieces in place and you’ll have everything you need to get more clients. From there you can build a bigger online presence via your website, Facebook page, etc. But for starters, keep it simple. Reach out. Make the ask.

You can do this!

Want Awesome Clients? Feed Them Dinner

By Build Your Business, Uncategorized No Comments

When you think of perfect clients, who comes to mind?

People who can pay you? People who have problems you can solve?
Those are great places to start, but there are other elements to include ESPECIALLY if you’re a coach or consultant.

Why? Because our work gets to the heart of people. We see their good, bad, and ugly. Our questions to spark growth can irritate some, enthrall others… in other words, there’s a lot of emotion attached to the work we do and we need to consider this when identifying who we want to work with.

Here’s what I do: I picture myself giving a big dinner party. The guests are my Ideal Clients. And as I look around the table, I see people who I absolutely LOVE to be around. People who love the food, appreciate the ambiance, and enjoy the entire experience. They are positive, proactive, action based, and doing good for the world.

You are sooooo not invited to my coaching group!

You are sooooo not invited to my coaching group!

You know who I don’t see when I picture this dinner party? I don’t see bullies, haters, drama queens, excuse makers, thieves, plagiarists, backstabbers, gossipers, or crybabies.

You, as a business owner, have every right to choose who is and who is NOT your ideal client. Even if the person comes to you loaded with money, ready to throw cash at your feet, if it’s not a fit you have the power to say NO.

I know, it can be scary. You probably need the money, need the sale, tell yourself you’ll just hunker down and tolerate this person until your coaching agreement is over.

Ummmmm, hello? You’re a coach right? When I trained as a coach, the big word of the day was TOLERATIONS. We helped people identify what they were TOLERATING, then coached them to release that. How can you work in integrity if you’re tolerating less than ideal clients?

When you clear yourself of non-ideal clients, you open the doors to more than your share of perfectly matched clients!

And please… don’t start with too much logic when you identify your Ideal Client. Start with your heart. Your head will understand. Here’s the recipe I’ve used for the last decade to fill my business with clients so cool, they’ll amaze and delight you and pay you!

1. List all the qualities and attributes of your perfect client. This is the person who you’re excited to work with and who brings total joy to your work.
Here are some examples:

My perfect client

  • is enthusiastic
  • sees my fee as a great value and pays on time
  • gets incredible results from our work
  • is open minded and willing to trust
  • refers reliable, wonderful people
  • makes time to implement our work
  • appreciates the new directions I take with my business and grows with me.

2. What is a common passion that I share with my ideal clients?
Consider these examples:

  • Committed to making a difference in the world
  • Uses organic products
  • Appreciates creativity, diversity, and connecting with the community
  • Loves kids and pets
  • Into technology
  • Enjoys the outdoors

3. What is this person’s temperament?
Are they:

  • assertive
  • outgoing
  • introverted
  • pensive
  • quiet
  • dreamy
  • childlike
  • strong
  • charismatic
  • daring
  • etc?

If you could wake up each day and know that your business was filled with perfect clients, how would you approach your work? What would your energy level be like? How would you present yourself to the rest of the world? What would your income be?

Yes, finding clients involves market research, such as studying demographics and trends. But it also involves setting the boundaries that will allow the right people to connect with you. By sharpening your focus on what it is that you want, you’ll be much clearer on what you don’t want.

Fill your business with perfect clients and enjoy the gift of loving what you do while making an outstanding living. Bon appetit!

I Set Healthy Boundaries

By Business Motivation No Comments

If you’re a coach, trainer, speaker, consultant, healer or other helping profession, you may feel challenged by setting firm boundaries around your time and availability. Your nature is to help and serve… but you need to take care of yourself too so you don’t burn out.

Your Talent and Genius (#TAG) deserve this.

Here are a few places to start:

1. WORK HOURS
Create a work schedule with your available days and times. Put this in the signature line of your emails so clients see this, and let clients know your hours when they sign up to work with you. Don’t give the impression that you’re open 24/7.

2. WHAT YOU DO/ WHAT YOU DON’T DO
One of my colleagues recently shared a frustration of being asked endless technical questions from his clients. They didn’t hire him for technical help, but somewhere along the line he must have given some technical help because it opened up the floodgates. Set up the working relationship right by outlining your strengths and providing links to resources people can tap into if they need help you’re not qualified to provide.

3. AUTOMATE
We all love the personal touch, but automation can help enforce boundaries. Setting up an auto-reply on your email over the weekend, using an online calendar to book appointments, and utilizing online forums for Q and A are just a few ways to protect your precious time while still helping clients.

4. MODEL WHAT OTHERS CAN EMULATE
Like attracts like. When you model healthy boundaries, you serve your clients. They’ll be inspired to set healthy boundaries in their lives too.

5. BE CHEERFUL ABOUT YOUR BOUNDARIES
Setting boundaries isn’t about being bitchy, reactive, or whiny about what you don’t tolerate. They’re there to kindly inform people how they can best be served. Use phrases such as “in order to best serve you, I’ve created these guidelines”. Put the positive spin on your boundaries and your fear of setting them will vanish.

If you have other tips to add to this, feel free to put them in the comments.

My $600 Meal

By Business Motivation, Uncategorized No Comments

I recently paid $600 for a meal.

I mean,  my portion of the bill was $600. And I don’t drink so it wasn’t a $100 food bill topped off by a $500 bar tab.

$600 for 15 courses of food at The French Laundry restaurant in Napa. Gasp! That’s more than my entire monthly food budget, and having it all at one meal?

Am I crazy? Am I obsessed? Was it worth it?

The Facebook Message

It all started 2 weeks prior when I got a private Facebook message  from my friend, PJ, a successful business coach.

Would you be interested in going to The French Laundry with me and 4 other movers & shakers? Budget $500 for the day. That’s a lot of money for a meal, but not a lot of money for a peak life experience that you’ll remember for a long long time.

LMK if you’d like to come. I need a final head count today.

The Restaurant

The French Laundry has been called “The best restaurant on the planet, period.” by food writer and TV personality Anthony Bourdain. It continues to hold 3 Michelin stars, the highest culinary honor possible. Chef Thomas Keller is considered one of the greatest chefs alive. It’s nearly impossible to get reservations, especially on a weekend.

Chefs and foodies from around the world make pilgrimages to eat at this place. People beg, cajole, and cry to get a seating. And here I am, with a message asking me if I’d like to go. All I have to do is say YES. That’s all…

Am I ready to spend a huge amount of money on a single meal… or am I being invited to invest in a peak life experience?

Of Course I Said Yes

Nancy in the kitchen at The French Laundry

There are certain things in life I’d LOVE to do but I hold back on. I can rationalize all sorts of reasons not to go places and try things. The French Laundry is a place I’ve always wanted to go to, but I never put forth the effort. I talked myself out of it many times, but with this invitation I know I could only say YES.

Relationships Matter

Reflecting on PJ’s invitation, I counted my blessings. She and I have only known each other a short time but we clicked when we first met. For her to think of me and invite me meant a lot. Her invitation forced me to do something for myself that I may not have done otherwise. The other women in our group were equally as awesome: 4 of us were business coaches, one a relationship coach and another a multi-million dollar business owner.

The Fabulous Foodie

One of our tablemates was a regular at the French Laundry. She’s a bona fide foodie and does PR in the gourmet food world. She’d been to the restaurant more than 50 times and was on a first name basis with most everyone there. She acted as our docent into the world of fine dining. She taught us something very important: ask questions.

“When they bring the butter, ask them to tell you where it’s from.”

6 Salts

“I’m going to ask for them to bring us the special salt. Listen closely as they tell you about each one.”

“The olive oil is $150 a bottle. He’s going to bring us some to taste. Listen and ask questions.”

We learned about 6 different salts from around the world (including Jurassic Salt from the dinosaur era). The olive oil was perfect. The butter you could eat straight with a spoon it was so good.

When I ordered herb tea with honey, I looked at my pot of honey and asked, “So tell me about the honey.”

I learned the source (within a few miles), and why they choose to buy honey from this particular vendor.

The White Truffles

We went during a short period when White Truffles were on the menu. White truffles are a rare mushroom that are hard to get and extremely expensive. Our Fabulous Foodie suggested we all try them as they are only available during the short season. “Oh and by the way, it’ll be an extra $200.”

At that moment, I started adding numbers up in my head. Was this going to be worth it? Have I reached my limit? I think it’s crazy to pay that much money for a freakin’ mushroom… makes no sense at all.

White Truffles with Black Butter over Risotto

The server came over to see who wanted to try the truffles and one by one, everyone at my table said “Yes”. I was going to say “No” but for some reason when my mouth opened up I heard myself saying “Yes”.

Peer pressure? Or my Higher Self speaking up for me?

What I was learning about myself during this culinary adventure was that I say NO to myself way too often. In the past, I’ve put things off like tropical vacations and paying for premium parking… but in the last year I’ve learned to shout YES with enthusiasm and to simply embrace the moment and not to worry so much about the price.

And in the past year I had a few great trips to new places in Vegas, Hawaii, actually paid for premium parking at a concert, and now I was going to dive right into a $200 bowl of chow. It was as much about saying YES to myself as it was about the experience.

 Say YES

At one point in the meal, we all went around the the table and gave a word that was our theme of the day. My word was “YES”. How could it be anything else?

Each time I got worried about the price, I simply reminded myself that I am a business owner. I’m not living on a fixed income. I can manifest clients, I can manifest money, I can manifest abundance. This meal out was no longer an expense- it was a ticket into a new place of receiving and saying YES to myself.

Desserts for Thought

My day was incredible. 6 hours of culinary orgasm, great conversation, bumping against my comfort zone, and breaking through to see my ability to create abundance and afford to say YES.

Will I be plunking down money like this every week? Highly unlikely unless I bring 50 friends to the local Thai restaurant. But knowing that there’s a time and place to say a big YES definitely opens a person up and peels away those layers of “No” that no longer serve us… and no longer fit.

Bon apetit!

[VIDEO] Market Research Gold Mine

By Marketing Tip, Uncategorized No Comments

This is one of my all-time favorite ninja tricks for market research!

Media outlets spend tens of thousands of dollars  (if not more) researching who their audience is so they can better attract advertisers. They compile their findings in handy dandy portfolios called a Media Kit.

I’ve used media kits over the years to help with a variety of marketing objectives. From content creation to pitching the media to finding the perfect words to use, it’s all here in the Media Kit.

There’s only one problem though… most magazines that create these kits make them VERY hard to find.

Fear not… I know where to find this gold mine of info and give you tips to use this valuable data to grow your business.
